I remember the first time I heard a Dangermuffin guitar-lick. I stopped thinking and my face lit up. Before 10 seconds could elapse in the song – Moonscapes – I clicked trackback to start it over. I let the smooth notes coil into my eardrums and turn the corners of mouth into a big smile. Then I heard Dan Lotti’s voice glide over the music and a wave of goose bumps crashed on my shoulder blades and trickled down my spine.

Dangermuffin – Moonscapes

I love new music and I am not unfamiliar to discovering a group that is producing rich and innovative tunes, but there was something different about this band. The Dangermuffin boys – Dan Lotti, Mike Sivilli and Steven Sandifer – have a true American style. Their melodies and lyrical messages embody a progressive American identity founded in values of peace, openness, and unity.

The Dangermuffin sound is like a savory American stew, based in bluegrass and rock yet spiced with foreign flavors of funk, afro-beat and reggae. Their new album – Olly Oxen Free – will treat your ears to something new. You will not only taste exquisite, melting-pot melodies but you will also hear messages of growth, social-critique, and peace in songs like Homestead, Rattle That cage, and The Rising Souls.

Dangermuffin makes me proud. No, I do not know them nor have I met them but their music stimulates subtle feelings of patriotism within me. They give Americans a soft voice, away from the stereotypical dominating American demeanor. You cannot have true pride without humility and I believe that by listening to Dangermuffin you can build on both.
